Hi,
I was watching a documentary called "For all Mankind" that was produced in 1989. Of course in all of the footage, no stars are shown, and what I understand and have always accepted was that this is due to the settings of the camera, such as exposure time, etc, which I can understand. However, I was always under the impression that the astronauts were seeing the stars, even on the moon, and this is what I read on things like Bad Astronomy, and sites like that. What was odd, was in this documentary, one of the astronauts said [to paraphrase] "looking back at the Earth made the vast black emptiness of space seem less hostile." So it seems that this astronaut is saying that he could not see the stars either. If you have ever had the opportunity to see the sky from a remote location, I don't think you would describe it as anything along the lines of hostile/un-inviting.
Please help.
I didn't find the right solution from the Internet.
